Description

My entry for:  naruto-nextgen.deviantart.com/…

I'm really proud about how this came out! Thanks to my obsession with Naruto, I've become so determined to do better as an artist in more ways than one! This includes finally being able to draw naruto styled and creating full backgrounds as well. Took me a couple of hours just studying and messing with PS brushes to get the right textures for the trees and I'm almost a little surprised how well they turned out. Lighting in this was kind of a miss for me but good enough for now! lol This scene depicts Kakashi's first time hanging out with his twin sons and trying to be a good dad. Just a heads up; he blew it.

It had been nearly three days since Kakashi was able to bring his sons to Konoha for the first time in their lives. Being the Hokage, he hadn’t found much spare time to be with them and they stayed hidden away at his apartment for the time being. There was guilt felt for just leaving them alone all day but Kakashi still had a responsibility to Konoha as well. It was awkward in all honesty; the boys didn’t talk much and he wasn’t really sure what to do with them. It'd been a long to since he had to entartain children. This was the first time Kakashi was actually alone with them, and getting to know who they were. He was exhausted trying to find a balance between his duties and two sons but determined to show them that they had a place in his life too.

After working out a few meetings and paperwork from his schedule, Kakashi took the twins out into the forest on the outskirts of the town. No one knew where he was going or what he was doing; he just claimed that he had family in town that he wanted to visit with, which was technically the truth.

They traveled far out into the deepest part of the woods, where the trees were dense and little people traveled through the area. It was perfect outside, and the birds chirped idly as the new family traveled up a slope dappled with the light breaking through the leaves. Kakashi lead the way, followed by Masaki and then Hotaka, who traveled the farthest back from the group. It had already been a couple of hours since they began their hike but not much was said, though Kakakshi did catch a few whispers between the boys when his back was turned. He glanced back at them as they got to one of the tougher parts of the trail and they looked absolutely winded. It was easy to see that they were overheating as they breathed heavily, their foreheads glistened with sweat. What was a pleasant temperature for Kakashi, was near broiling for the boys who spent their entire lives living in the Land of Snow.

“We should probably take a break. You two haven't adapted to the weather around here.” Kakashi said, as he turned and faced them.

“We’re fine!” Hotaka said between breaths as his gray hair fell over his face; he was more burnt out than his brother. “Let’s just keep going.”

“Actually… can we stop? I don’t think I can make it much further!” Masaki called out as he bent over and placed his hands on his knees. He wiped the side of his face on his shoulder as he caught his breath.

“Quit being lazy! We're almost at the top!” Hotaka shouted as he reached out and shoved his brother roughly. Masaki stumbled forward, nearly falling on his face but Kakashi was there in an instant lifting him back up gently. Kakashi glared at Hotaka, his eyebrows pulling forward.

“Hey! Don’t be pushing your brother like that. What’s your problem?” Kakashi said, his tone low. Hotaka scowled at them as Masaki brushed out his own shirt. It was just as Miyuki had warned; Hotaka would lash out at Masaki if he didn’t get his way.

“Nothing.” Hotaka said as he looked to the ground. “I don’t see why it matters. Masaski doesn’t care.”

“It’s alright. I didn’t get hurt!” Masaki said, grabbing Kakashi’s arm. His hazel eyes looked up into his father’s and he grinned. With a soft sigh, Kakashi walked briskly to stand before Hotaka.

“He might not care, but I do. Don't do it again.” He said as he stared down into Hotaka’s eyes. Kakashi couldn’t understand why he was picking on Masaki, but he was going to find out as soon as possible. Hotaka stayed quiet as he held Kakashi’s stare. Finally, the gray-haired boy broke down as his head dropped in defeat, taking a step back. That was somewhat of a good sign; Hotaka wasn’t exactly confrontational, at least not yet. Kakashi sighed and looked around, noticing a large tree in the middle of a meadow. It appeared to be a good enough place to rest for a moment, maybe even catch up on some reading.

“Come on. Let's head over to that tree. We can rest there for a little bit.” Kakashi said as he pointed to in the direction of the meadow. Lush green grass lined the area as a gentle breeze carried stray leaves to the ground. The perfect place to settle down in and cool off. Kakashi kneeled down as he eased his back against the large tree, looking up as the branches swayed. Hotaka settled himself on the other side of the tree while Masaki took a front seat to watch them both. He smiled and chuckled to himself as he peered at Kakashi frequently.

“Is there a reason why you're laughing?” Kakashi asked, raising an eyebrow at Masaki. The fact that he laughed at seemingly nothing was off-putting.

“Can we see what you look like without your mask? Please?” Masaki asked after a moment.

Kakashi reached up to pull his mask down but hesitated. He was expecting them to ask eventually; it was only natural they would be curious but he still felt uncomfortable. Yet, what kind of father would he be if even his own kids didn't know what he looked like? It was one thing to deny his students a look, but his kids had already gone so long without even knowing who he was. With a soft sigh, he slipped his finger under his mask and pulled it under his chin.

“There.” He said simply as Masaki’s eye widened in surprise. Even Hotaka’s curiosity was piqued as he stood up and made his way around the tree. Both boys stared for a moment, then Masaki bursted out in laughter.

“You look just like Hotaka!” He shouted as he rolled back into the grass, continuing to ride out the last few chuckles escaping his mouth before sighing. “It’s so weird! I can’t believe it!”

“Well great.” Hotaka said with a sneer. “Stop laughing, Masaki. It’s not that funny.”

“It’s just… It proves he really is our dad. I’ve always wondered what it’d be like.” Masaki said, sitting up with strands of grass laced in his brown hair. Hotaka rolled his eyes as he leaped up to one of the higher tree branches where he laid back. Kakashi smiled and laughed softly. It was funny, he always wondered what it would be like to have children of his own. Sure, Naruto and the others came close but it was different with the twins. There was just something so odd seeing his face in the faces of the young boys, yet enduring at the same time.

“Um… Kakashi, can I ask you few questions?” Masaki piped up after a long silence.

“Ask away.” Kakashi said as he crossed his arms over his chest.

“Can you tell me about the White Fang?”

Kakashi blinked, his eyebrows raising. “Where in the world did you hear that name from?”

“Mom had mentioned that was our grandpa’s nickname...Right?

“Well… Yes. What do you want to know about him?” Kakashi asked not really knowing where to begin. He wasn’t quite expecting them to know anything about Sakumo.

“Was he as strong as you are?”

“Your grandfather was much stronger than I am. Maybe even stronger than all the previous Hokage too. He was a legend and his name was known across the world.”

“Woah! Did he have a scar over his eye like you do?” Masaki asked as a big grin took over his face.

“Nope, I don’t remember him having any scars. None of the enemies he faced could get close enough to touch him.”

“How’d he die then?” Masaki asked, still smiling.

“How about I answer that question when you're a bit older? It's not exactly a story for children.”

Masaki giggled. “Okay… How come you and Mom aren’t married? All my friend’s parents are married.”

Kakashi’s expression became annoyed. “You aren't exactly asking questions I can answer, Masaki. Maybe we should hold off on them for a little while.” He said, pulling his mask back up.

“Oh, sorry.” Masaki replied softly, tilting his head and looking confused. “Can I ask one more thing?”

“Only if it’s necessary.” Kakashi replied, his expression wary about anything else this kid could possibly ask.

“Should we call you Dad or Kakashi?” Masaki finally asked, his face unsure. Kakashi’s eyelids lowered and he sat up a little more.

“You can call me whatever you're comfortable with when we're alone.” Kakashi replied as Masaki perked up with excitement. He crawled over to Kakashi’s side and leaned in on him, obviously not shy anymore. Kakashi’s eyebrows raised and he couldn’t help but smile; maybe being a father to these kids wasn't going to be as hard as he originally thought. Miyuki was so worried to let him take the kids to Konoha by himself, but they were doing just fine. However, the pair did have their little quirks that Kakashi figured could be smoothed out in time.

Hotaka was very quiet; a little too quiet for Kakashi's comfort. When he looked upwards into the tree, Kakashi saw Hotaka was reading something, he wasn't quite sure where he got it from but it was interesting that his kid enjoyed reading too. Kakashi looked a little closer, seeing the cover of the book and his face dropped. In a panic, he patted his jacket and realized his favorite book was in Hotaka hands. In the blink of an eye, Kakashi was on Hotaka's branch snatching the book from his hands.

"Hey! I was reading that!" Hotaka yelled, the anger boiling out in his tone.

"This book is not for kids!" Kakashi shouted, tucking his book back away in his jacket. "Why are you stealing my things?"

"We just wanted to see how the story ends." Hotaka said, a frown forming on his mouth as Kakashi's eyes widened in horror.

"This is the last book of the series! You both read the others?!" Kakashi asked in a panic. He'd hidden his books under the floorboards of his apartment well before the boys arrived, figuring they wouldn't bother with them. Hotaka nodded, standing up on the tree branch and scratching his head. Kakashi dragged his hands down the sides of his face as he let out a loud groan. "No, no, no!"

"Whats the big deal?" Hotaka asked, walking closer to Kakashi.
They were his kids alright, crafty enough to say things to get Kakashi to lower his guard enough for Masaki to grab his book without him even noticing. He didn't know when it happened, but Kakashi realized he had made a huge mistake when he underestimated the warnings Miyuki gave him about the boys.

"Your mom is going to kill me! That's the big deal! You can't tell anyone that you read these books, especially Miyuki!" Kakashi said, sounding desperate. Hotaka stared down at Masaki and shrugged. Kakashi's eyes narrowed. "Come on guys, she'll never trust me alone with you again!"

Masaki and Hotaka stared blankly at Kakashi.

"Alright, alright! Fine! I'll get you guys your own Ninken dogs; just promise not to say anything about the books! Deal?" Kakashi replied as both of their eyes went wide with excitement.

"Deal!" They shouted in unison. Kakashi let out a sigh; this wasn't going to be easy after all.
